Rick Beardsell: ShakeSphere Founder, Product Designer and Masters World Champion

Rick Beardsell is the founder of ShakeSphere, a product designer and a ten-time masters world champion in athletics. His journey brings together international business, competitive sprinting and a return to sport after cancer treatment.

For Rick, designing products and competing on the track share a common discipline: making small improvements, learning from setbacks and continuing to work towards a clear goal.

Rick Beardsell and the ShakeSphere Story

ShakeSphere began with a practical question: could a shaker mix effectively without a loose ball or mesh grid?

Rick Beardsell developed a patented capsule-shaped design with a rounded interior, allowing ingredients to move around the bottle while removing corners where powder can collect. The aim was to create a product that was effective, easy to clean and convenient for everyday use.

Taking ShakeSphere from an idea to production involved prototypes, manufacturing trials and repeated refinements. Every detail mattered, from the shape of the bottle to how it felt in the user’s hand.

ShakeSphere has since sold more than two million units across over 80 countries. As the range has grown, Rick’s approach has remained focused on solving practical problems through thoughtful design.

Returning to Athletics After Cancer

In late 2019, Rick Beardsell was diagnosed with testicular cancer. After the cancer spread to his lungs, he underwent chemotherapy in early 2020.

Treatment changed the rhythm of daily life. For an athlete accustomed to demanding training, recovery required patience and a different understanding of progress.

Returning to competitive sprinting took years. There were setbacks, interrupted training and physical challenges along the way. Rick had to rebuild gradually, adapting his preparation to what his body could manage.

In 2024, he won the European masters 400 metres title and set a British age-group record. The achievement carried particular significance after the lengthy return from treatment.

For Rick Beardsell, cancer recovery changed how he valued sport. Training and competition became opportunities to appreciate, alongside the ambition to perform.

Rick Beardsell’s Approach to Sprinting and Product Design

Rick’s athletics career has included ten masters world championship titles. His work with ShakeSphere draws on many of the same habits that underpin his training: preparation, consistency and close attention to detail.

A small adjustment to sprint technique can influence a race. A refinement to a bottle’s shape, grip or lid can improve the experience of using it every day.

Both pursuits involve testing ideas against results. Progress often comes through reviewing what happened, identifying what needs to change and trying again.

That process continues to shape Rick’s work as a product designer and his ambitions as a masters sprinter.

Business, Family and the Next Chapter

Today, Rick Beardsell’s focus includes developing ShakeSphere products, working with international partners and continuing his involvement in masters athletics.

Family life provides perspective alongside those ambitions. It is a reminder that success includes the time spent away from work and training, as well as the results achieved within them.

When sharing his experiences with young people, Rick emphasises the habits behind achievement: consistent effort, preparation, asking for help and the willingness to begin again.

There are still products to develop and sporting goals to pursue. Rick Beardsell’s story continues through that work—one design, training session and new challenge at a time.

How to Succeed

Rick Beardsell brings over 20 years of unstoppable entrepreneurial spirit and the mindset of a world-class athlete.

Solve A Problem

ShakeSphere was born out of frustration with the free, flimsy shakers you’d get when buying protein powder. With my background in product design and 20+ years as an athlete, I wanted something faster, cleaner, and more efficient — no rattling balls, no messy grids. After years of testing and prototyping, the patented capsule shape was created: nothing leaks, nothing sticks, no extras needed — just a simple, sleek solution that works.

Grow Your Business

I don’t do half-measures — I can help you see the blind spots, tighten your strategy, and push your business to perform at its absolute best.

Spot weaknesses before they become roadblocks.

Turn chaos into clarity — refine your methods, streamline your systems, and make every process work harder for you.

Brainstorm ideas that actually move the needle. I love getting into the details — pricing, positioning, and performance.

Learn from wins and losses. Every result tells a story, and together we’ll turn yours into momentum.

Plan for growth — not guess at it. Strategy, profits, pricing, global expansion — we’ll map it all with precision and energy.

Build a business that runs like an athlete. Lean, focused, efficient — built to win.

Never Give Up - EVER

The moment you stop pushing, you start fading. Keep moving — for your health, your happiness, your life. When you’re strong, everything else follows — your business, your mindset, your results.
Life’s made of short sprints that make up one long marathon. Each challenge tests you, sharpens you, builds you. And when you hit that final stretch, you’ll know you left nothing behind. No excuses. No regrets. Just forward — always forward.

Don't Be Lazy

Celebrate your wins, absolutely — you’ve earned them. But too many CEOs grind like machines, then “reward” themselves by wrecking the very vessel that carries them. You can’t outwork bad health, and you can’t buy back energy.
Your body is the best bit of kit you own. It’s your daily vehicle for everything — business, family, life. So fuel it right. Move it. Rest it. Invest in it like your biggest asset — because it is.
Look after the machine, and the results take care of themselves.

Positive You

In business, mindset is your real competitive edge. Expect good things, demand great energy — from yourself and everyone around you. When things go wrong (and they will), don’t lose your head — adapt, laugh, learn, and keep pushing. Every setback is just feedback with a price tag attached. You’ll learn more from a failure than a hundred easy wins. And if something hits hard? Good. That’s experience — it means you’re in the game. Stay hungry, stay positive, and keep moving forward. That’s how leaders build momentum.

Do What You Love

Don’t chase money — chase meaning. Do something you genuinely care about, something that fires you up. When your work aligns with your passion, you stay driven, creative, and unstoppable.

If your passion happens to sit in a crowded market — perfect. That means there’s opportunity. Find your angle. Carve out a niche that others overlook — a unique twist, purpose, or audience that only you can serve.

When you love what you do, you don’t burn out — you build up.
